Ancient Olympia

Ancient Elis

Oxylus, who came from Aetolia, founded Elis, uniting all the pre-existing polities in the region, and became its first king.

Ilida placed considerable importance on the organization of the Olympic Games which were held every four years. Before and during the games, the whole area came alive as a month before the games began all the athletes were required to come to Ilida to train. Many came with their friends and family from various parts of the country.

Chlemoutsi Castle

Chlemoutsi Castle is 34 kilometers northwest of Agios Ilias in the village of Castro, Kyllini, on the westernmost cape of the Peloponnese. The castle is built on top of a hill, it dominates the plain of Ilia. The castle was founded in 1220-1223 by the ruler Godefroid I Villeardouin and was the strongest fortress in the Frankish principality of Achaia, which was particularly prosperous during the Villeardouin era.

It was built in a strategic position with an extensive view of the plain of Ilia and the Ionian Sea.

This enabled it to protect both the capital of the Andravida principality and the important port of Glarentza.
